Task 3  Observational Drawing - Natural Object - Fruit

 

Find a small natural object such as an apple or a leaf and draw it.

The key to this exercise is not to draw from memory or what you think it looks like but to actually observe closely the details you see including shadows and reflections.

Check that you are doing the following

  • using a soft grey lead pencil such as a B pencil

  • make your drawing approximately life size

  • make the drawing in your workbook

  • observe where the highlights are and make that part of the object lighter

  • observe texture and features on the surface

  • draw shadows that appear on or next to the object

  • draw the object from a viewpoint that show the object features clearly

You may start off by drawing quick sketch studies to get the overall shape.

Try viewing the object from different viewpoints.

The purpose of the drawing is to show the following:

form, proportion, surface textures and relationships to other objects

 

As a practical guide to creating tone, texture and form with a grey pencil consider the following and practice reproducing these on the printed worksheet provided:
